Distal Radius Fracture

Also known as a 'Colles' fracture

Clinical Scaphoid Fracture

If the patient presents with tenderness over the scaphoid, but no fracture is evident on x-ray, then a Thumb Spica cast is applied.

After 10 days repeat x-rays are taken.

 

If no fracture is present on repeat films --> Remove cast. No further immobilisation required

If fracture is present on repeat films --> Remove cast and apply a full scaphoid cast

Ankle Fracture

Also known as a 'Back and U' slab.

This cast is typically used to stabilise ankle fractures once they have been reduced.

Patients can be discharged home in this cast, or remain in the cast while they await theatre.
